Internet

Well, i should have internet back on by the end of the week, i’ve got a computer in working order again, so i’ll be posting more regular again. In other news… my pet linux project…

USL formally Sleepy Hollow. Well, we at haktstudios.com *site is not up right now, sorry* have decided to use a debian base. We are modifiying the installer. Here’s how it’s going to work, we are modifiying the installer, and creating an installer script to allow you to produce your very own install cd’s. Yes thats right your own install cd’s. The script will allow you to preconfigure a script to automatically set up your network and install specific packages without you doing anything more then inserting the install cd and booting up the computer. Most packages should be able to be preconfigured before you even burn the cd. Of course, its still in testing and prototyping phases right now *aka, it doesn’t work yet* but we hope to be past that soon. Anyway, wish us luck. I’m also working on developing some groupware tools for it that ought to make things talk to each other better. I’m hoping to have a protocol that works over ssh that will allow your network admins to manage every computer in your network from a single workstation. I smell some good business uses for this project in the future. Of course most of this still needs to be tested, and a lot of bugs still need to be worked out before its practical… but i’m sure you can see where this is going.

Insomnia

Well, I’ve been having trouble getting to sleep the last couple of days. I’ve tried cutting down on the caffeine intake, not really helping much. I’ve been trying to work myself to sleep on my time off, but I just keep going and going. I’m getting so tired now that my head feels kinda floaty. Its all a little strange. I’ve been going on about 70-80 hours without sleep now. If I sound kinda strange, chalk it up to being tired as hell and unable to sleep. OK, my disclaimer out of the way to explain my loopiness, on with the post.

Well I got a lead on a new house. 6 Bedrooms, 3 baths, unfinished basement, 800/month, 1000 down. Sounds like a good deal to me. A friend and I are looking in to going in together on this beauty of a property, so here’s the plan on how we want to set it up. In the basement, which after inspections doesn’t have any leaking problems, we are going to put together a lovely server farm. Get back down to basics, ya know. Root out some dough from people who need a little storage or file space. I got myself a lead on a few dozen SPARC workstations running Solaris of course… Those will be fun to play with. I plan on setting up one in every room. I’ve also got the lead on 4 Apple Dual G4 machines, which will be used for Graphics workstations. I have a room I’m going to set up just for that. All this for free! God bless friends who must have the absolute newest of everything! I might have, I’m not sure if they guy will come through yet, 16 old servers for 1000 bucks. The slowest of which is running an amd 64 x2 4000 in it. Yes they are repurposed desktop systems. I’m not sure what all hardware is involved yet, but I do know they all run. I’ll need to get rid of that pesky Windows 2000 server edition running Microsoft IIS with Linux or BSD, Hardware determining, running Apache. I might keep one Microsoft server if I need for someone who wants to pay me to run there shit off of it. I’ll make sure I keep all the licenses and install disks in the very least. If I do in fact get these systems, I will be upgrading one of them with Longhorn Server 2008, my original test server didn’t quite have the balls to run it… so I’m stuck here with a beta evaluation, and no way to test it. All of the systems possess AMD64 X2 processors. So that should be great. I think I’ll Transform the fastest one into a gaming box, after I upgrade the gfx card of course.

Yes, bright plans ahead. I still need to find out what it would cost to drop in a fiber trunk at the house, or the very least Ethernet Internet service, which i can have up to a 100Mb/s connection. I’m going with whatever ends up the cheaper deal. The owner of the house said they would agree to a rent to own contract with me on the house, if I up the rent to 1000/month. I’m strongly considering it. It would end up costing me about 200K over the lifetime of the contract to own the house. Not a bas prospect… But I’ll need to talk to a couple more roomates to get that within budget. Ya know, rent out a couple of rooms to people I can trust. Anyway, I’ll keep ya posted.

On to other things…

Somebody broke my driver side rear view mirror on the lovely piece of junk that I refer to as my car. Thank you street punks. Nothing a little JB Weld can’t fix. In fact I already cold welded it back on. Unless you get up close, you can’t even tell it was ever broken. No new computer yet, not one capable of getting online anyway. I’ve got a couple of old systems lying around, but they will be too much of a pain in the ass to drag up to the local hotspots. I’m not turning my internet back on right now due to the housing prospect. Hopefully I’ll be at the new location soon. I’m looking into putting together a business plan and getting a small business loan so that I can get set up, but I still need to get a couple of finances straightened out so that they will call me loan worthy. Luckilly i’m not too far behind and it shouldn’t take me too long to get caught back up. That little instance without a job really hurt me bad. Wish me luck.

On the personal side, I’ve been having a little trouble keeping in contact with friends, what with my psychotic hours and what not. I’m hoping to get a new job with daytime hours so I can be awake to hang out on my days off. Plus this work every other day crap is driving me nuts. I want 2 days off in a row for once. That way I have enough time to do some stupid shit to relax and enough time after words to recover before getting back to work again. And should I need a bit extra sleep, I’ll have a whole extra day to sleep.

Well, I guess that will be all for now. I look forward to my next post. Until then, have a good day/night, and if you get in trouble, don’t get caught *evil grin*.

Lookin for a new job

Well i got the freight job, but frankly, I’m not all that good at physical labor. So I’m on the search for a new job. Hopefully I find one soon. I’m just glad I still have my current job so that there isn’t a whole lotta stress over finding a new one. Anyway, wish me luck.

Well, looks like I won’t be getting a new laptop soon due to financial constraints, but a friend of a friend has a few mac books he’s about to throw out, and he said he’d give me one to get by. Of course I have to wait for him to come back through town. He’s going to offload a few Sparc systems on me too. Pretty fast ones by the sound of it.

Just a warning, for those of you who don’t like to read a lot, this post will be pretty long. I gotta make up for a long period of not being able to get online.

My friend Kit got a new job at Macy’s, I’m happy for him. He really needed to get his act straight. Plus, he had to get rid of that nasty looking rat tail growing off the back of his head. I’m glad for that. First time I ever saw him in a suit. Ladies, look out. XD

SoTD got busted for possession. He had a little bit of marijuana on him apparently. I figure it like this… He’s not hurting anyone, so whats the problem. If he wants to smoke a little jane, he should be allowed too. I think the government goes way overboard on that subject. All this is because some fucking prick back in the day, Aslinger *i spelled it wrong sorry, I’ll get the correct spelling and fix it later* decided that he wanted to attack it. He used every excuse in the book to scare the American public into fearing it. He used symptoms from other drugs and equated them to this relatively harmless drug. Originally it was a way to discriminate against Mexican immigrants, and I firmly believe that the laws against this substance should be genuinely re-evaluated.

I finally got the network running on my Solaris box… stupid dhcp wouldn’t work correctly so I had to statically assign it. Not that I mind running statics. My only other gripe is that it has problems with my file server. It Keeps not wanting to talk to the server. I know it’s a configuration issue with the Solaris box simply for the fact that none of the other systems have an issue with it. Meh, whatever.

I’m working on a few side projects as well, currently I’m working on making a Desktop Environment… well designing it. I still lack the skills to write some of the programs I need. But its really meant as a learning project, so thats not a problem now is it. I figure it like this… I’ll make a tool communication layer that all the applications will talk to each other through. That should be enable them to do cut and paste between applications. Once I’ve gotten that worked out, I’ll make a couple of applications to test it out. If it works well, I’ll continue to make the rest of the components until I have a complete environment. I have my reasons for this project but I really don’t feel like discussing them right now, so you’ll need to draw your own conclusions.

Well, I gotta go pick up a pizza, so till next time.
